Crates with Removable Plywood Partitions

Showing off a cube crate with removable plywood partitions, lined with felt

Commerce Packaging works with clients to create custom crating solutions. We recently built crates with removable parts, giving our customer customizability even after the order is done and the crate is shipped.

These cute cube-shaped containers feature removable plywood partitions lined with felt and 1" foam. Whether you separate and organize items using the partitions, or remove the partitions to make room for larger items, your items will still be well-protected by the felt lining the inside walls of the crate itself and the foam lining the bottom.

Here's some crates with all the partitions removed (and a picture of the removed partitions):

Here's one of the crates with all the partitions included:

And here's multiple crates with the top on:

Whichever configuration proves most appropriate for our customer's situation, or even if their situation changes, Commerce Packaging's custom crates will be there to help them.

Crating a Sculpture

A short description of how we protected a sculpture for an art gallery, including the construction of a custom crate.

Commerce Packaging is proud to protect artwork with the same level of care and precision that an artist puts in their work. We recently did so by creating a custom crate to aid in the safe transport of a sculpture for an art gallery.

For this shipment, we constructed a custom crate. The interior was carefully designed with foam and corrugated cushioning for support. This created a snug, protective environment that minimized movement and safeguarded the sculpture from vibration and impact.

The crate itself was constructed from plywood and reinforced with cleating to ensure maximum stability throughout handling and transport.

Constructing a Crate for an SMT Platform to Technical Drawing Specifications

A summary of how we constructed a custom crate for an SMT platform to a customer's technical drawing specs.

Commerce Packaging specializes in the design and manufacturing of custom crates and containers. We work closely with clients to create protective and durable packaging to streamline logistics and shipping requirements. We can construct and assemble crates according to customer-provided technical drawings.

One of our custom crates created according to technical drawing specifications involved crating an SMT (surface-mount technology) system. (An SMT system is an electronic machine used for assembly in manufacturing.) We used plywood with additional structural bracketing for unit support.

The crate interior included carpeted joists for cushioning, heavy bolted supports for stability, and 2” foam panels to create a floating suspension system. (A floating suspension system ensures if a container holding an object experiences impact, the energy is absorbed before reaching the object. See

This design ensures the equipment remains secure and protected from vibration, impact, and handling stress throughout transport. The crate exterior was ISPM15-certified and received an ISPM15 stamp, as all of our crates are.

Professional Painting Packaging Project

A detailed look into how we packaged and crated a canvas painting by an artist.

Shipping paintings requires more than a standard box. They must be protected from surface damage, vibration, punctures, and environmental exposure throughout the journey. Commerce Packaging recently completed the specialized packaging of an artist's canvas painting, demonstrating the company’s commitment to museum-quality handling and protection of fine art during transport.

We first shielded the painting from surface damage, wrapping it in two types of wrapping paper to protect the paint from abrasion and chemical interaction: Neutral Kraft (acid-free glassine) paper and MIL-PRF-121G Grade A paper.

The artwork was then prepared with a floating suspension system. A floating suspension system ensures that if a package experiences impact (such as being dropped) during transit, the energy is absorbed before reaching the object. We cut 2” polyethylene foam into planks as necessary to line the wrapped artwork, essentially creating a foam box. The polyethylene foam box serves as the primary shock absorber here. It's resilient and doesn't crumble under pressure, making it ideal for high-value art transport.

Once the piece was secured in the foam box, the piece was placed inside a second heavy-duty carton, constructed from double-wall corrugated cardboard. This industrial-grade material provides a significantly higher burst test rating—typically 275 pounds or greater—offering superior resistance to punctures and compression from surrounding freight during transport.

Professional packaging is widely recommended for artwork valued at over $1,000, where improper materials or handling can lead to costly damage. By using archival materials and engineered cushioning systems, Commerce Packaging helps galleries, artists, and collectors ship valuable works safely and confidently.

Protecting a Large Instrument in Transit

A detailed look into how we packed a marimba to protect it on its travels.

Shipping large musical instruments presents a unique logistical challenge. In addition to the typical challenges of an object their size, they're also highly sensitive to vibration and environmental changes during transit. Ensuring that they arrive safely requires careful preparation & specialized packaging, which are keys to any crating project at Commerce Packaging.

We recently shipped a marimba, which arrived with seven manufacturer-supplied padded cases designed specifically to protect each part of the instrument. These cases significantly increased durability during travel and provided an ideal foundation for protective crating.

To further protect the marimba during shipment, we constructed a custom wooden crate with plywood, built to our usual high standards. The crate provided generous interior space to accommodate the padded instrument cases without compressing them.

Inside the crate, our team applied careful blocking and bracing along with multiple layers of 1/4” bubble wrap to create additional cushioning and density. This approach ensured the instrument components remained secure and protected from vibration throughout the journey.

Commerce Packaging specializes in protective crating for a wide range of large and delicate musical instruments—from mallet percussion and brass instruments to guitars and pianos. Each shipment is designed with the understanding that these instruments are valuable, finely tuned works of craftsmanship that must arrive ready to perform.

With the right packaging strategy, even the most complex instruments can travel safely, preserving the sound and artistry musicians depend on when the crate is finally opened.
